kendrick beauty backlash

There’s a lot of shit going down with Kendrick Lamar’s new video. A big feminist backlash against what he persumably thought was a good thing for wimmin kind everywhere!

I want to prefix this by saying I think Kendrick is – generally speaking – fucking incredible. And he’s always been vocal about issues within his own Compton community especially (and there’s a piece here explaining how he’s done loads for Black america with his music and the stuff he calls out) but part of his new video – mentioning beauty ideals – is flippant as fuck.

Mia Klose is a singer, songwriter, artist and stylist. I’ve known her for years and back in the day we used to tear up the streets of Camden and Soho looking like extras from a Poison video. Actually more Motley Crue… but anyway, Mia is  lovely Swedish lady that has always had her own incredible look and approach to beauty/style. She’s always given zero fucks about trends and done her own thing – and I find that an endlessly admirable quality in a human. And she’s a killer singer too! So here she is, in her own words.

At Download festival last year I decided it would be mega lols to take two Cadbury Fingers – and stick them under my top lip. Hil-arious, I thought – I look like a walrus!Everyone guffawed so evidently my buffoonery must have paid off. The less funny part was being tagged on Instagram in a photo capturing that moment. Firstly, because it was shot from below, so I had about 56 double chins (that’s 112 actual chins) and secondly, because I literally saw the real me captured in one single moment. Basically, a massive goon. See…..

In the December 2015 issue of Marie Claire UK,  I shot model Tess Holliday in a bad ass location in East London – God’s Own Junkyard – a neon haven of joy. I was just sorting through my old copies of the magazine and came across it and my behind the scenes pics!

I’d wanted to shoot Tess for ages. She’s inspiring people to embrace their natural beauty and love themselves (she’s by no means the only person doing this – we’re all trying to change things here) but she’s done it very well with her voice and #effyourbeautystandards campaign!
